Photo Rating Application

Project Description

We had to develop a photo gallery where the user can upload, tag and share pictures worldwide, browse pictures uploaded by the Gallery Members as well as rate and vote for the best picture. To meet these requirements, we integrated various components available with Joomla like mamblog, virtumart and customized them. We also added our own customized pages to Joomla like creating the 'Winners Gallery'.

Challenges

We faced a number of challenges during the development of this site. The main challenge in the project was design customization and design integration. Being a photo gallery site, the user would be required to upload and rate pictures here. So the design was made keeping in mind that the user should be able to comfortably perform the tasks. The pictures uploaded by the user could be seen in different sizes. GD library was used for dynamic creation of images as well as to protect the images from distortion.

Setting up the Winners Gallery was another challenge. Algorithms were based on the maximum number of votes given to the pictures. Calculations were then made to arrive at the Picture Of The Week(s) and Month.

Another challenge was the setting up of virtumart component available with Joomla. This required intensive design customization. For instance, we customized Joomla to showcase the products in a custom design to sell online. The process of navigation through cart was also customized.

Conclusion

We were able to successfully meet all the challenges and deliver the project on time.
