Happy Birthday Intelligaia!

Intelligaia proudly “marched” (pun intended) towards completion of 12 years on the 1st of this month.

A time for mixed feeling of emotions wrapped with satisfaction of having come a long way. We have grown as a team as well as an organization and have developed products that have positively changed the lives of millions of users. Our experience has taught us to think in terms of interactions using device/technology in different settings and environments. We have walked on a less tread path and written stories to help create usable softwares.

This has also been a year of awards and accolades. But the greatest award that we cherish is the building trust of our customers who are confident of our ability to deliver successfully. We look forward to continue building upon these relationships.

We took some time off to celebrate this occasion with our team members with a sumptuous lunch spread at Barbeque Nation. It was a time for sharing stories of experiences gained, of having reached each milestone and of dreaming of the road ahead. We look forward to another year of successful learning and accomplishments as number 12 is believed to be the number of strength, conviction and absoluteness.

The Human Face Of Bangalore- First Hand Account

There is more to Bangalore than coconut water, software companies, malls and a few pubs. On the human side, the people are most friendly and are willing to help. Here is an incident that made a profound impression on our team currently visiting Bangalore for some on-site work.

Yesterday, the team traveling in a cab asked for directions from an auto driver. He gave the directions and the taxi moved on. After about 5-10 minutes, the auto driver came rushing and stopped the cab. He was profoundly apologetic for having given the wrong directions and gave the right directions. In a world where people have become so self centric, this incident came as a breather of fresh air and reinstated that righteousness or should we say ‘right consciousness’ still exists in this world!

Using Stories to create Softwares

“Tell me a fact and I’ll learn. Tell me a truth and I’ll believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever.”

Storytelling has been around since time began – it was the way people passed down their history and legends before we started writing and storing things. The ancient Vedas are a compilation of stories which are handed over from race to another. Storytelling is a part of life, intrinsic to most cultures. Stories were found to stimulate the imaginations and thinking power of a child. Since then, fairy tales has been a hot favorite amongst children of all ages. Human stories create an empathic atmosphere of common understanding.

At TED – one of the most successful platforms for sharing stories the world over, people tell stories to inspire others and see it as an opportunity to engage with others.

Using Stories to create Softwares…

At Intelligaia, we love writing stories to help create usable softwares.

Software should empower people. It should make them feel in control. Not confused. Not lost. Interactions play a very important role in ‘defining’ a software or device. Thinking in terms of interactions using device/technology in different settings and environments sets the stage for initiation of the stories.

Interviewing the customer before we start work on a design project is an integral part of our design process. Client briefs are like stories, they have certain tasks which they want done. We create designs around these stories. It is important for the client to believe in our conviction of how to use these stories. To have trust in us to know what is good for their business in terms of design.

Decisions regarding design iterations vs design experimentation, who approves the final UI, scope for flexibility of timelines, our process opposed to other processes are facets of various situations that we handle as part and parcel of our design services.

We love to see the stories magically transform into usable software. Software that transforms the way the users feel and experience. Software that impact a million!

Each of our designs has a story to tell. Story telling is an art that we have successfully weaved into our design services.

Would you like to share a story or two? Who knows it may transform the way you think :)

A Flying Start To Welcome Spring

People at Intelligaia took a break from their daily schedule to celebrate Basant Panchmi, a festival to welcome the onset of Spring. Kite flying is associated with celebrating this festival. Everyone gathered at the office terrace. Pleasant weather, childish enthusiasm, joyous camaraderie, deafening shouts marked the celebrations. It was so easy to get transported back to childhood days. We just loved trying our hands at kite flying.

Workshop on UXD at Arena Multimedia, Chandigarh

Intelligaia was invited to conduct a 2 day workshop on UX (User Experience). The topics that were animatedly discussed were User Experience and Usability, Interaction Design  and Design QA. The importance of user experience, how will a real user feel after interacting with the software, website, animation, design or graphics created by the designers, how usability can bring a smile to the user; these questions were raised which evoked thought provoking responses from the students. The concept of ‘Interaction Design’ was introduced to the students and why thinking by sketching, building models, and expressing potential ideas using wireframes was so important was explained to them. The workshop also touched upon how to validate implementation of design. This was discussed by our QA Lead Rajiv Walia.

The attractive slide shows carefully prepared by our UX Experts Rajiv Kaul and Cheena Kaul as well as the  challenging exercises hit the right chords with the audience. Our team conducting this workshop for the budding artists/designers whose enthusiasm was infectious feel that these workshops really help in putting across concepts in an informal manner. After all what can surpass the satisfaction for the curiosity that you have aroused in the designers asking for more? We will definitely be conducting more such workshops in the future.

Design tips for Localized WPF UI

While working on WPF–based applications, I keep discovering new things in designing UI. I am combining them all here to share:

1. Write your UI in XAML; avoid creating UI in code. When you create your UI by using XAML, you expose it through built-in localization APIs.

2. Avoid hard coding of strings in the project. Any display text or messages should be read from a resource file.

3. Avoid using absolute positions and fixed sizes to layout content; instead, use relative or automatic sizing.

a. Use SizeToCotent and keep widths and heights set to Auto.

b. Use Grid and its size-sharing feature.

4. Length of the string is also of prime importance. It’s a noted fact that when we translate English language in to any other language the words increase by minimum 30 to 40 %.

5. Enable TextWrapping on TextBlock to avoid clipping.

6. Set the xml:lang attribute. This attribute describes the culture of a specific element and its child elements. The value of this property changes the behavior of several features in WPF.

7. If you are using built-in fonts, use the resource file to bundle the same. You can load the fonts from the resource file rather than telling the user explicitly to install the fonts in his PC.

8. Create a customized composite font to obtain better control of fonts that are used for different languages. By default, WPF uses the GlobalUserInterface.composite font in your Windows\Fonts directory.

9. When you create navigation applications that may be localized in a culture that presents text in a right-to-left format, explicitly set the FlowDirection of every page to ensure the page does not inherit FlowDirection from the NavigationWindow.

10. Calendar changes from country to country. Definitely, Gregorian calendar is the most used. However, there are some other calendars like Hebrew, Islamic, Chinese etc. All these calendars have huge differences. For instance, Nepal follows Nepali Calendar, which is 56.7 years ahead of Gregorian calendar. So according to cultural settings user can expect the dates accordingly.

11. Keyboards layout changes according locale and region. So be careful while designing the short cut keys. The function keys are mostly present in all key boards. Probably you can consider the function keys for short cut keys.

Keen to hear new tips for designing localized products :)
